The Army Chief labels Maoists’ a “socio-economic class struggle”.
During an event at the Pune University, the Army Chief explained his reservations about employing the army against the Left Wing Extremists in this manner.
The disruptive activities and spread of Naxalites in around 14 states poses a major security challenge. The government has adopted a multi-dimensional and integrated approach to counter this menace, he said, adding, “Since it is socio-economic class struggle, direct involvement of the army is not mandated.”[Sakaal Times] Emphasis added
Socio-economic class struggle… Err. A certain Ms. Roy would certainly approve of that characterisation by General Kapoor. However, going by the very public pronouncements by Union Home Minister, this certainly is not the official position of the Government of India.
There may be many other valid reasons for eschewing the direct employment of the army against the Maoists. But by putting forth this Leftist argument of class struggle, Army Chief has nearly lost the battle of ideas as he has brushed aside the grave security threat posed to the nation by these brutal criminals. The essential nature of the conflict against Maoist supporters is one of information and perceptions, and the Army Chief — with his latest statement — has shown himself completely inept at spearheading information operations against them. The country would not be wrong in expecting its top military brass to handle such situations adroitly, in a far more professional manner.
For a start, can we have the Army Chief choosing his words more carefully in the future.
i am not sure weather remarks of the Indian Army chief deserve the kind of labelling you tend tp provide to his rather innocnt charectrisation. While there is no doubt that Maoists are a menace and needs to be curbed but it also needs to be recognised that it is a product of mis governance, petty politicking and inability of state to maintain law and order.
It may come as surprise that many a political parties use these mercenries as their local thugs to garner votes and intimidate people. According to a former Chief secretary of one of the Naxal infected states, many a time he had to launch operations by keeping the CM and cabinet out o the loop because of the fear that they will compromise the operations.
It is time that Centre and States, get their act together by streamlining adminsitration, making police forces more efficent and above all instituting socio economic reforms and processes that address the issue.
Involvment of the Army because police forces are inept or unwilling is neither good or desirable. To thta extent i subscribe to the views of Army Chief

comments of army chief will not liked by peoples like you who are supporters of corrupt netas and baboos who mishandled the situation in such a way that now the tribals are forced to pick arms to fight for their rights. you require the heart of a soldier to understand that who loves his country. Just one test for what the army chief says. Imagine a top politician or the police chief saying it and we would all label him as having no sense of information operations. Why have different yardsticks for a service chief?

I totally agree with Arun Sahgal.The factual position on ground is what has been candidly stated by Army Chief & this is what everyone in the Armed Forces & intellectuals in the know of the problem subsribes to.Even the PM in waiting talks the same privately.So it is only the GoI manned by currupt netas, baboos & their supporters like you who are responsible for creating this situation think & state otherwise.

I dont even understand why the Army Chief gets called to such gatherings. Perhaps, people just do not realize the calibre of the the kind of leadership in the Indian Army today.

It is a well known fact that no Army Chief is allowed to speak his mind.From Sam to Rody to Malik to Kapoor.Recently the Navel Vice Chief had to render apology for speaking his mind.Then, why blame them.They are made/expected to speak the language of their Masters(the politicians).A number of agencies like the political parties,state babus,state police,para military forces,arms dealers and the maoists all have their own interests – if anyone understands it,he won’t blame the poor ‘fauji’, who has all the responsibility but no authority.

What is maoism?? please read about it once. don’t talk like Arnab Goswami, without base, just riding on other’s ideas.
If the govt, or the Police Forces (including PMF) are not able to deal with something which is affecting 14 states (14 STATES OUT OF 28, 50%) then we need to disintegrate. the possible options are
Hindi (or near hindi) states
NE states
South Indian States
central states
(and of course) J&K
Or
agree out stalk is bad and we need to change and be more centralist, the way USA became a state ( u wouldn’t be able to escape this conflict by being an armchair journalist, u would have to take part in this).
