Anything to precipitate a military crisis

Having failed to evoke a military response from India after the terror attacks in Mumbai, the Pakistani army has not yet lost all hopes of provoking India. So, PTI quotes Pakistani media reports

Pakistan has moved fresh troops to the Line of Control in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and the international border with India to protect “vital points”, cancelled all leave for armed forces personnel and almost put a security alert into effect amidst escalating tensions in the region.

The Indian Prime Minister has already ruled out the military option. So are these military deployments in anticipation of a follow-up terrorist strike in India or a precursor to media reports about nukes being readied by the Pakistani army.

And they said that Musharraf was a gambler and Kiyani a thoughtful General. On the evidence at hand, it seems that he is more like a suicidal jehadi himself.

  1. I am starting to get confused by this provocative attitude of Pakistan. They have made it clear time and again that they will use any weapons (read nukes) to defend themselves. I hope that they do know that if they were to do that, their country will be bombed into the Stone Age, where they WILL literally be eating grass (if they remain alive i.e.). No calls of restraint etc by the international community or anyone will save them from this fate. Is their current situation so bad, or their hatred of India so deep that they are willing to sacrifice their nation ?

On the other hand, if they do not carry out the nuclear threat, they will be soundly beaten in a conventional war. So what goes ?

I feel that Kiyani is a thoughtful General!

The present civilian government is courtesy the US. Kiyani understands that he cannot attempt a coup d’état for a couple of years. The only way he can convince US that military is a better bet than politicians, is by indirectly conveying to the global community as to who calls the shot in Pakistan. He will still remain in the background. However, from time to time he will ensure that the politicians eat their words and sing his tunes.

Pervez Musharraf too followed a similar strategy for almost a decade and he is still alive

The only way out for India is to provide a viable alternative to US to position its military hardware in Afghanistan by bypassing Pakistan.

  3. It’s very possible Kiyan is the jihadi type. Maybe he wants India to get embroiled in an occupational type war ala the USA in Iraq. One would hope the leadership understands such obvious possibilities.

Kudos to Manmohan Singh for ruling out military action.
