Pakistan-NATO “best ever” cooperation
…or Pakistan army’s good behaviour for the new administration.
Flexibility is the hallmark of any military and Pakistan army is no different. So they want to project the right image of perfect cooperation with Western forces to the incoming Obama administration. In any case, the President-elect and his advisors have been making the right noises about Pakistani sensitivities on Kashmir. After the stern warnings and ultimatum from Bush in his Texan drawl, these sounds from Obama and gang must be sounding like music to the Pakistani establishment.
Wait for more such stories emanating from Pakistan till the new Presidency is inaugurated in January next year. Is Pakistan playing along enticed by the Obama carrot? Obama administration may buy this temporary display of exemplary behaviour from a fractious and recalcitrant ally but the stick is nver going to be too far off.
We should not take any attempts at reviving the meddling lying down. We should not treat them as mere idle rhetoric, but as provocations which could re-embolden terrorism in J&K. If such rhetoric reignites terrorism, then India will be forced to return more troops to the LoC, which will cause Pak to divert troops away from FATA/NWFP/etc. The US would only come to rue its words.
